There's a Button in my Pocket!

THE PLAN

Playtime
We have a puzzle or some sensory toys out at the beginning of Storytime.  After we are done playing, the children grab their name tags and put them in the basket.

Two Little Hands
See this post for our Two Little Hands rhyme.

All About Today
Friday's weather was cold and sunny.  The children finally decided to switch the season to winter.  Even though there was no snow on the ground, it had been cold enough to be winter.

Learning Time:
This session is devoted to learning about the letters of the alphabet.  The children use flashcards to match up the letters that I show them on the bean bag.  I usually use 6 letters each session for matching so it doesn't take too long.

Library Mouse:
One special Storytime guest wrote the library mouse a letter.  I told the kids that the library mouse was on vacation, but that I would read the letter and give it to him when he got back.

Read & Listen:

We read Bunches of Buttons by Michael Dahl.  The kids helped me with identifying the colors of the buttons that the boy found in the story, but most of them were too young to understand how to count by tens.

Special Activity:
As our special activity this week, we played button bingo.  I drew a card from a pile and they had to put a button on the correct shape with the correct color.  In hindsight, I should have simplified the game (ie, only colors or shapes) but the kids loved calling Bingo!

Ending Song:
We sang "Itsy Bitsy Spider" as our Ending Song today.  They really like doing the hand motions, and usually we do a variety of spiders.  One favorite of the kids is the Rockin' Rollin' Spider.  We also do the teeny tiny spider (with our teeny tiny voices) and the great BIG spider (with our great BIG voices).  The variety keeps the kids engaged because we don't do all of the spiders each week.
