Gardening

THE PLAN

We colored using only blue crayons for playtime today.  We drew lots of fish!

All About Today
Friday's weather was warm and sunny!   

Learning Time:
Today we read the tongue twister, "Peter Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers".  Each week during this Storytime session will feature a different nursery rhyme.

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers;
A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked;
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
Where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?

We said the tongue twister over and over, and by the end the kids were pretty good at it!.

Read & Listen:


We read two books today!  First we listened to Tops and Bottoms by Janet Stevens.  


Then we read Growing Vegetable Soup by Lois Ehlert.

Learning Time:
We tasted fruit!  We taste-tested peaches, pineapple, pears, mandarin oranges, and cherries.  Most of the kids liked all of the fruit, although I did have one that didn't like the mandarin oranges.  The majority of kids picked the cherry as their favorite!

Read to Your Pet Event!

Toby would love for someone to come read to him!
Pets are more than adorable fuzzy faces--they're also effective promoters of childhood literacy. Children can relax, have fun, and gain confidence as they read to animals that are as nonjudgmental as they are cute.

Interested? Come to the library's Read to Your Pet event on Saturday, September 28, from 1-3 pm. Pets--both real and stuffed--are welcome in the library on this special day. Children will have a storytime with Samma and then be able to choose from a wide variety of animal-themed books that they can read to their pets. Please note that all pets should be on a leash or in a carrier, and owners are responsible for their pets while they're in the library.

Celebrate Cherry Jubilee Day!

Today is Cherry Jubilee Day!  


Cherry Jubilee is a cherry dessert served over ice cream.  Instead of eating Cherry Jubilee, why not enjoy a nice slice of cherry pie instead?

Learning Time:
Today we read the nursery rhyme, "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star".  Each week during this Storytime session will feature a different nursery rhyme.

Twinkle, twinkle, little star.
How I wonder what you are.
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky.
Twinkle, twinkle, little star.
How I wonder what you are.

I talked to the kids about melodies, and how the ABC song and Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star have the same tunes.

Read & Listen:


We read Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star by Caldecott Medal winner Jerry Pinkney.  After the first verse, the kids were surprised to see that there are more verses to the song.

Learning Time:
I hid a bunch of shapes with numbers on them around the library.  The kids had to find all of the shapes and put them into number order.

Today we read the nursery rhyme, "Hey Diddle, Diddle".  Each week during this Storytime session will feature a different nursery rhyme.

Hey, diddle, diddle,
The cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon;
The little dog laughed
To see such sport,
And the dish ran away with the spoon.

Then the kids and I talked about jumping cows, and if they've ever watched a dish run away with a spoon.

Read & Listen:


We read It Looked Like Spilt Milk by Charles G. Shaw.  The words are really repetitive, so by the end, the kids were helping me read the book!

Learning Time:
We played with shaving cream today!  The kids got messy and played with shaving cream on a very large piece of plastic.  We practiced writing some letters and we also drew different shapes that we saw from the book.
